How much does a website cost?

What goes into the price of a website, what you pay for after launch, and how to get a quote that fits your budget.

It’s the first question most people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on what the site needs to do. Two sites can look alike and take very different amounts of work.

Here’s what goes into the price, so you know what you’re paying for.

What shapes the price

  • How many pages. A five-page site takes less time than a thirty-page one. Each page needs a layout, words and images.
  • How much is custom. A design made for your business takes more work than a ready-made template, and it’s what makes you look different from everyone else.
  • Special features. Booking, online forms, a members area or a searchable list all add time.
  • Who writes the words. If your content is ready, the build moves faster. If it needs to be written, that’s part of the work.
  • Research and planning. Learning your market and your customers first is what makes the site work. Here’s why it comes before design.

What you pay after launch

A website has a few running costs, whoever builds it:

  • Your domain, renewed every year.
  • Hosting, the always-on computer your site lives on. Usually paid monthly or yearly.
  • Care and updates. Security updates, backups and small changes, either done by you or by someone you trust.

Hosting and domains, explained covers the first two in more detail.

Where cheap sites cost more

A low price up front can cost more later. Watch for:

  • A domain registered in someone else’s name. If they disappear, so does your address.
  • Slow, heavy sites that visitors leave before they load.
  • No updates or backups, until something breaks.
  • Price jumps at renewal that weren’t mentioned at the start.

Ask who owns the domain, where the site is hosted and what happens after launch. A good answer to all three is worth more than a lower quote.
